| HISTORY: |
The Church of the
Redeemer - Presbyterian had its beginnings in 1887 when a bearded man, clad in
mackinaws and packs and carrying snowshoes and a turkey on his back, arrived
in Manistique. He was the Rev. J.
Payson Mills, who had been sent by Lake Superior Presbytery to organize a
Presbyterian Church. Rev. mills
raised considerable enthusiasm and collected twenty-five signatures on a
petition asking the Presbytery for such an organization. The first
official meeting of the church occurred on June 23, 1887. The church grew quickly and the original church building was
dedicated on August 12 of 1888. The
Rev. Andrew McLean was the pastor. The
manse next door to the church was built in 1902. In its early years, part of Redeemer’s mission was to start
three small chapels in outlying areas. Additions
to the building were made in 1954 and 1978. The Church of the Redeemer has remained an active and lively congregation throughout the ensuing years and has always been a significant part of the Manistique community. Our current membership stands at 108. |
| MISSION STATEMENT: |
Because God has
created us, loved us, and loves us still, because God calls us into the church
to be the body of Christ; we, the people of the Church of the
Redeemer-Presbyterian, serve God by welcoming all who would come to our life
of worship, prayer and study, nurture and community.
We give witness to our faith through our preaching, teaching caring,
service and mission. We are a
Presbyterian (USA) Church, reflecting our Reformed heritage through our form
of government, connection to the larger church, and allegiance to that
tradition. To further the
work of the whole body of Christ, we willingly work and worship with
Christians of all denominations. In obedience to
our Lord’s commandment to love our neighbor, we reach out to all God’s
people in individual and corporate acts of mercy in this community and through
the various agencies of the Presbyterian Church (USA). In all of our
life together we seek to be a sign of the Kingdom, giving praise and thanks to
God who re-creates us, redeems and sustains us, remembers us, calls us, and
cares for us. |
| GOVERNANCE: |
We are part of the
Presbyterian Church (USA) which means that we are connected with the Presbytery
of Mackinac. We are governed by a
nine member Session and our congregation is cared for by a Board of Deacons. |
