Fairview Third Grade
Mrs. Sherman
Welcome to third grade!
Third grade is the first year students receive letter grades. The chart below shows how the grades are determined for grades 3 - 5 in the Manistique Area School System. Grades are averaged at the end of each marking period when report cards are prepared. Letter grades are not given in art or gym. CR for credit is recorded to indicate the student participated in those classes. Please be aware that some regular classroom work is not graded because it is practice or classwork. Papers marked CW indicate work done together in class and are also ungraded .
Students have time to work on assignments throughout the day, but many days they will have some homework. Setting aside a quiet area and a specific time for homework is a proven aid for developing good work habits.
If you would like to work with your third graders when they have no homework, you can help them study spelling. Spelling tests are given every Friday and include sentence dictation.
A few minutes a day spent memorizing addition and subtraction facts is also a good activity. We do timed math drills in class. Home practice will help them complete their regular daily assignments faster. We spend at least another hour daily on improving other mathematical skills.
Encourage your child to read at home just for fun 15 minutes every day. This can be silent reading, reading aloud to you, or listening as you read aloud. Children love the daily story read aloud. Research shows that children who are read to (even after they are able to read) become better readers. Any of this home reading will help them with the Accelerated Reading tests students take on the computer. Many of the books 3rd graders read are only worth half a point and that is only awarded to them if they receive 100% on the computer test. Scores of less than 100% result in the computer assigning a point value of four-tenths or three-tenths of one point for that test. It takes quite awhile for some students to earn even 5 points. The minimum goal for the third graders for the A.R. program is thirty points for the year.
In order to help your child succeed in school every student must have a backpack and carry it back and forth to school daily. This will teach your child organizational skills and develop responsibility which are necessary skills for his or her success this year and future school years.
Gym class will be on Wednesdays, so your child needs to have tennis shoes. Colored pencils are recommended for use in Social Studies.
You can reach Fairview School at 341-4311. Please call only at 7:50- 8:10, 10:00 - 10:15, or 11:45-12:15, or after 3:00, when school is dismissed.
